M.Ed Guidance and Counseling
After trying several careers, he decided to return to college to obtain a degree in elementary education. Upon completion of the program at the University of Utah, he applied for and obtained his first teaching job in the small southeast community of Hollis, teaching 4th - 8thgrade. This was a challenging, yet rewarding, position. He then went on to teach two more years in another school in Southeast Island School District, teaching K-5 in Naukati, Alaska. These positions taught him a great deal about teaching in small communities in a multi-age classroom.
He then took a year off from teaching to attend the University of Alaska in Anchorage, where he obtained a master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling. It was then off to The Lake and Peninsula School District, where he provided counseling services to 7 of the 14 schools in the district.
After five years of itinerant counseling, he moved to the community of Kokhanok, where he was the principal. This position included traveling to two additional sites where he was the principal: Levelock and Igiugig. Kokhanok School had not made AYP prior to his moving there. In his second year of being the principal, Kokhanok made AYP for the first time. Through experiences like this, cultural activities, building a strong activities program, and a sense of community was established. It was in Kokhanok where he met his amazing wife Ann. They were married in Jamaica on March 1, 2011.
After four years in Kokhanok, they accepted positions in Ambler with the Northwest Arctic Borough School District. Ambler is located on the south side of the Brooks Range and was their first experience in an Inupiaq community. After working in Ambler for two years, Todd and Ann decided to move farther north to the community of Kaktovik.
