As the principal at Nuiqsut Trapper School, I am proud to be called by my Eskimo name Quunnuq (it means calm water) or by my nickname, Debbe. It is exciting to be here and I look forward to continuing the honor of working with each and every student, staff, and community member in Nuiqsut.
I began my career in education in Temple, Texas as a middle school science teacher. During that time, I was asked to lead the Temple Independent School District (TISD) Vertical and Horizontal Alignment Team for science department. TISD serves 8600 Pre-K to 12 students on 15 campuses. After 6 years of teaching science and technology at the middle school level and because of my educational background, I was moved to the high school to teach Advanced Placement (AP) Biology, International Baccalaureate (IB) Biology and Dual Credit Anatomy and Physiology.
In 2009, my husband and I moved to Alaska. Our first North Slope teaching positions were at Point Hope. While in Point Hope we taught Math and Science for 4 years. Following our wonderful experience at Tikġaq, it was my privilege to be principal at Meade River School in Atqasuk. In July 2014, we relocated to Nuiqsut and I served as the principal of Trapper School. In all 3 villages, I embraced the Iñupiat values and saw the need to do my part to perpetuate the culture as a lead educator. As you get to know me, you will see how much I respect and admire the local culture and value the love of learning new things.
I have experience as a leader (résumé) of various organizations and a deeply ingrained passion for meeting the challenges of educating students in a rapidly changing world. My goal is to bring out and nurture the strengths of our school and community populations while instilling and modeling a desire to be a life long learner. In fact, being almost an "elder", I have enrolled in post graduate classes for the summer and school year. I believe and model that you are never too old to learn!
Originally from Texas, we have four grown children and seven grandchildren. As a proud parent and grandparent, I will always be happy to show you pictures and share stories. However, our students receive the "lion's share" of attention and are treated with all the respect and care I give our own children. I have been an educator for sixteen years in a variety of settings and I believe that respectful relationships are essential building blocks for education. I take the responsibility of being a lead educator very seriously. I will do my best to make sure each and every student gets the best possible education.
It will be my honor and pleasure to serve at Principal at Nuiqsut again this year!
