It's hard to believe that my husband, Hoss, and I moved to Kaktovik a year ago! He and I have three sons who are grown-up (Vital 24, Arimie 21, and Lloyd 19) and out of the nest so this was our very first move without children since leaving our home state of Iowa in 1993. We moved here from Egegik, Alaska, which is located on the Alaskan Peninsula at the mouth of the Egegik River on Bristol Bay, west of Katmai National Park and so we are somewhat familiar with living with bears...giant brown ones instead of giant white ones! Hoss and I have been married for 25 years! We lived in Alaska for 20 years (almost half our lives) and now consider it our home. In fact, we can't imagine not being Alaskans!
Our adventure in Alaska began in Fairbanks. Hoss attended university there while I stayed home with our young children. My first teaching job in Alaska was with LKSD in Kwigillingok (I taught 3rd-4rth grade Transition) over 15 years ago. Then we moved to the LPSD where I started out in Pedro Bay (I taught K-6) and then on to Egegik where I taught K-12 for 6 years and then K-6 and Special Education for 3 more (all of my sons graduated from high school in Egegik plus one niece and I had 2 friends earn their GED!).
I have always loved winter; I get excited every time it snows...even though I complain in May, June and July sometimes...secretly, I'm still a bit excited! I have also always wanted to see polar bears in person. So far Kaktovik has been a wonderful addition to our Alaskan adventure!
