Ahoy Matey!

My name is Ms. Are and I will be your captain this year for our journey full of learning, fun, and adventures. I am so pleased to have you coming aboard. I can’t wait to learn all about you, but first I’ll tell you a little about me. I am originally from South Carolina, but I am so thrilled to be back in Atqasuk for my 3rd year! I have a degree in Early Childhood Education and I am currently working on my Master’s degree at University of Alaska Anchorage.

There is so much that I’m looking forward to this year! Some of the topics we study in 2nd and 3rd grade are base‐ten systems, standard units of measure, Developing understanding of multiplication and division and strategies for multiplication and division within 100. Developing understanding of fractions, especially unit fractions (fractions with numerator 1). Developing understanding of the structure of rectangular arrays and of area. Describing and analyzing two-dimensional shapes.

I have high expectations for each student but I recognize that all of us learn, create, and express ideas in different ways. I encourage students to seek their own unique way and to interpret ideas in ways that most appeal to their own creative nature. We will be using a new reading curriculum this year, Reach for Reading.  We will be also using the the Units of Study by Lucy Calkins and Bridges math for our math curriculum. I look forward to a year full of adventures as we explore treasure island together.

So all hands on deck, batten down the hatches, host the jolly roger and let’s set sail, let the adventures begin for this new year!

Your Captain,

Danielle Are
